To ensure your CV makes it through this crucial stage, consider these essential guidelines:

  • Focus on relevant keywords rather than creative formatting. Mirror the terminology used in the job description. For example, if you're applying for a Digital Content Strategist role, ensure these exact words appear in your CV

  • Avoid unnecessary design elements such as logos, photos, symbols and multiple colours. Maintain a clean, professional format using standard fonts like Arial, Calibre or Times New Roman

  • Submit your CV as a Microsoft Word document instead of a PDF file, unless you're applying for a design-focused position where portfolio presentation matters

  • Include specific industry terms related to publishing software (e.g., Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress), editorial responsibilities, production skills and relevant certifications that ATS systems will be scanning for

  • Strategically incorporate keywords throughout your CV, but ensure it remains readable and natural for when human reviewers assess it

  • Use bullet points rather than dense paragraphs to improve readability and scanning efficiency

  • Keep formatting consistent and straightforward. Present different qualification categories clearly on separate lines

Beyond optimising for AI tools, remember these fundamental CV principles to effectively communicate your publishing credentials:

  • Aim for a concise two-page CV. The objective is to provide recruitment specialists with a comprehensive overview of your experience and skills whilst respecting their time—particularly important in the fast-paced publishing sector

  • Structure your experience chronologically, beginning with your current role. Your present position is typically most relevant to the publishing role you're targeting

  • Include interests and hobbies that might demonstrate transferable skills valuable in publishing—such as blogging, creative writing, or involvement with literary organisations

  • Thoroughly proofread for spelling, punctuation and grammar. As a publishing professional, attention to detail is paramount. Tools like Grammarly can help identify errors you might miss

  • Carefully craft your personal profile to align with current publishing industry needs, focusing on relevant digital skills, editorial expertise or market knowledge. Avoid highlighting experience that might pigeonhole you away from your target role

  • Ensure all employment and education dates are accurate and consistent  discrepancies can raise unnecessary concerns during the vetting process
